What’s a mastectomy bra? And what’s a Skarlette?

A mastectomy bra is a specially designed bra that’s worn by women who’ve undergone a mastectomy for breast cancer.

This type of bra is specifically created to provide comfort, support, and aesthetic solutions for those women who’ve had breast reconstruction surgery, or wear prosthetics (false boobs).

Mastectomy bras differ from regular bras in several ways.

They’re designed with features that accommodate the changes in breast shape and size after surgery.

Some key characteristics of mastectomy bras include:

  • Pockets: Mastectomy bras often have built-in pockets to hold breast forms or prostheses.

  • Soft and Comfortable Materials: Mastectomy bras are typically made from soft, breathable, and non-irritating materials such as cotton or microfiber. Supportive Construction: Mastectomy bras are constructed with wider and more supportive underbands, side panels, and adjustable straps to provide support for the chest and back.

  • Front Closure or Adjustable Back Closure options.

  • Stylish Design Options: Mastectomy bras now come in an increasing and wide range of styles, including various colours, patterns, and designs.

  • When searching for a mastectomy bra, it’s advisable to consult with a professional fitter who is experienced in looking after women following breast cancer surgery, and can provide guidance on finding the right size, style, and features that best suit your needs.

So what’s a Skarlette then?

Skarlette is a flat mastectomy bra. There are a growing number of women who are opting to remain flat after breast cancer surgery for a variety of reasons.

Without breasts, there is no requirement for the physical support a traditional mastectomy bra offers, in fact, there is no need to wear a bra at all for physical reasons.

However, when we talk about healing and recovery, wearing a Skarlette helps to restore self-confidence, positive body image, femininity, and overall quality of life for post-mastectomy women who choose to live flat.

Skarlette Bra Heather

The flat bra designed by Skarlette, by a flat woman for flat women, takes the shape of a bralette, with a deeper underband.

This reduces the pressure around a sore and sensitive rib cage by spreading the soft material over a deeper area of the chest; this can also help with covering of scars.

There are no cups! We have luxuriously soft fabric in the shape of flat triangles, which perfectly embrace a flat chest – no gaping or puckering.

We take care to make sure the Skarlette has soft seems so as to reduce irritation, which is so important.

Dainty straps and lacy designs. We can take advantage of having no breasts or prosthetics to support, and ditch the big, wide ugly straps of a traditional mastectomy bra!

Our Skarlette designs have feminine, attractive and dainty straps to compliment the beautiful lace of the flat triangular lingerie.
